Turn on the secure browser
Lock the test in Safe Exam Browser, so pupils cannot use other websites and programs.
With Secure browser, pupils take the test in Safe Exam Browser (SEB). It locks the computer to the test, so pupils cannot reach other websites, tools or services while they write.
Turn on the secure browser
Open the settings
Go to Settings on the test's page and select Edit. You can also turn it on in the Security step when you create the test.
Turn on Secure browser
Turn on Secure browser under During the test.
Choose apps and websites
- Under Allowed apps, tick the programs pupils may use, for each operating system in use. The apps must be installed on the pupils' computers before the test.
- Turn on Bookmarks and tick the websites pupils may open. Other websites are closed.
Your school decides which apps and websites you can choose from. Select Save.
The quit password
When the secure browser is on and you have saved, Settings shows a Quit password. If a pupil has to quit Safe Exam Browser before the test is submitted, for example because the computer freezes, you enter this password. Do not share the password with pupils.
The password stays the same when you change other settings. If you turn the secure browser off and on again, the test gets a new password.
What pupils need to know
Tell pupils well before the test:
- They must use a Mac or Windows computer. Tablets and phones do not work.
- They must install Safe Exam Browser and test that it works. Send them to Installation guide for Safe Exam Browser(opens in a new tab).
- The apps you have allowed must be installed in advance.
Changes along the way
If you change allowed apps or bookmarks while pupils are taking the test, they must close the test and start it again. Their answers are kept. You are asked about this before you save.
Exceptions for individual pupils
A pupil who cannot use the secure browser can get Ordinary browser through accommodations.
